Docs / Using SayQL

SayQL for teams

With SayQL for teams, your company runs its own SayQL server. It holds the team's database connections, so nobody needs the database passwords, and it keeps an audit log of every query.

Not using a team? Nothing changes. Without signing in, SayQL never contacts a team server and works exactly as before.

  • Your team admin sends you an invite: a server address and an invite code, or a link that starts with sayql://team-join.
  • Open Settings → Team, click Sign in, and enter the server and the code. An invite link opens the same dialog filled in; check the server is your company's, then click Sign in. Nothing is sent before you do.
  • An invite code works once and expires after 7 days. Your sign-in is kept in your system keychain.
  • Settings → Team shows the server, your email and the team's plan and licence. Sign out ends the sign-in on the server and removes it from this computer.

Team connections

The team's connections appear in the Database Navigator under Team. They work like your own: the Ask box, the editor and agent mode all use them. A few things differ:

  • Read-only. Your team's server runs only queries that read data. A statement that would change data is refused before it reaches the database.
  • No host or password. SayQL never sees them: the schema and every query go through your team's server. Team connections can't be edited or deleted in SayQL; your team admin manages them.
  • Audited. Each query is recorded in the server's audit log with where it came from (Ask box, editor or agent) and, from the Ask box or agent mode, the question it answers. Results are never stored.

Rules set by your team admin

  • What agent mode may see. Your admin sets the most the AI may see of results on each team connection. You can choose less in Agent settings, not more; the options above it are marked Set by your team admin.
  • Never-send columns. Columns your admin marks never send are added to the connection's list and can't be removed. Agent mode refuses queries that use them, and the server leaves them out of every result (the Results panel says how many were withheld).

Team AI

Your team admin can also give the team one company AI key, with monthly limits. Then, on team connections, the Ask box, fixes, Improve and agent mode use your team's AI through your team's server, and you don't need an AI key of your own for them. Your own connections keep using your own AI provider and key.

  • The Ask box shows your team's model, marked Team. Click it to see the models your admin allows; they're set by your team admin and can't be switched there.
  • Settings → Team shows who provides the AI and how much you and your team have used this month against the limits. When a limit is reached, AI requests on team connections stop until the 1st of the next month, and SayQL says so.

Privacy

When you're signed in, queries on team connections and the questions they answer go to your team's server, which your company runs, and are recorded in its audit log. Your own connections, and anything you do on them, never go there.

With team AI on, AI requests on team connections (your question, the schema and, in agent mode if allowed, masked rows) also go to your company's SayQL server, which forwards them to your company's AI provider and stores only token counts. Nothing reaches SayQL itself. Without team AI, questions on team connections go to the AI provider you chose in Settings, as on your own connections.
